The groundbreaking course
that started it all
The Landing

As the original course of Lake Oconee, The Landing set the stage for what has become a premier golf destination. Featuring a variety of holes that wind through naturally wooded areas and rolling hills, this course provides enjoyable play for golfers of all levels. One of two Bob Cupp designs at Reynolds Lake Oconee, The Landing was acquired by Reynolds in 2005 and renovated in 2013.

HOLE 1
The opening hole sets the tone for the entire round as the uphill tee sets up a very difficult second shot. There is a generous landing area for the tee shot, but the deep bunkers to the front and left of the green must be avoided.

HOLE 2
The downhill tee shot allows longer hitters to go for the green in two, but a pond short and left of the green will require a precise approach. The green has three subtle tiers, so putting can be a challenge.

HOLE 3
The short downhill hole is fronted by a pond making proper club selection important. Any tee shot that lands on the front half of the green is at risk of spinning back into the water, and the winds off the lake will make choosing the correct club a difficult chore. The green is fairly generous and is guarded by bunkers left and right.

HOLE 4
The fourth hole may be the most difficult hole on the course. The downhill tee shot must avoid a small creek to the left and out of bounds to the right. The long second shot will be played on an uneven lie to a green that is flanked by Lake Oconee to the left and behind the green. Par here will be a great score.

HOLE 5
One of the most scenic holes on the course, as Lake Oconee borders the entire hole on the left. The length of the second shot will depend on how much of the lake is challenged on the tee shot. The approach shot is very demanding with the lake to the left and short, and a deep bunker to the right of the green. Once on the green putting will be a challenge as the green slopes severely right to left.

HOLE 6
The tee shot plays uphill and the left side should be favored on the drive as the right side has the "Valley of Sin," a deep swale in the rough that makes the second shot very difficult. The hole continues to climb towards the green, and the second shot should be played as far left as possible for the best angle into the small green.

HOLE 7
Any shot that is left of the green will find a difficult bunker and there is out of bounds not far from the right edge of the green. The green is severely sloped from back to front, so putting will be a challenge if you are not on the correct portion of the green.

HOLE 8
The tee shot is elevated and the drive must be fit between pot bunkers left and a pond right of the fairway. Many times a fairway wood is a better play off the tee to avoid the bunkers. The approach to the green plays back uphill and any shot right of the green will end up in a deep ravine well below the putting surface.

HOLE 9
The landing area is generous, but any ball left of the fairway will leave a very awkward stance. The second shot must be played around a large pond that fronts the right side of the green. The large green has some significant movement on the right side, so any hole location right of center will require the player to flirt with the pond on the approach to have a legitimate shot at birdie.

HOLE 10
The back nine begins with a long uphill par four. All tee shots must be played to the right of the center to allow for the sloping fairway. The second shot is uphill to a large green with a deep bunker to the right.

HOLE 11
This hole may be the most difficult par 3 at Lake Oconee. The tee shot must carry all the way to the green on this severely uphill hole. Unless the tee shot was perfectly struck and judged, the second shot will be very difficult. Any shot that is short or right leaves a very difficult recovery shot to a steeply sloping green, while any shot long of the green will be nearly impossible to stop near the hole.

HOLE 12
A tee shot to the right must be avoided as deep fairway bunkers and woods guard the entire right side. The green is guarded by bunkers to the front left of the putting surface.

HOLE 13
Many players will not need to hit a driver on the short par 4. The pot bunkers must be avoided off the tee to leave a short approach to a small elevated green. Any tee shot too far left will be blocked out by a cluster of trees. This is a classic short par 4.

HOLE 14
Accuracy is important on this long hole with woods lining both sides. Any player who chooses to go for the green in two must hit a quality shot to take advantage of their option; they risk being penalized by out of bounds left of the green. There are various methods to attack the hole, where par remains a quality score.

HOLE 15
The difficulty of this hole is rivaled only by the fourth hole. The downhill tee shot can be played with a driver. The farther back the player decides to lay up off the tee, the more difficult the second shot. The approach plays straight back up the hill to a green that is guarded by a cluster of bunkers. Any approach that lands on the front of the green is at risk of spinning off the green and will not stop until it has settled 30 to 40 yards back down the fairway.

HOLE 16
The last par 5 is a double dogleg with no bunkers. The tee shot is relatively open, and the difficulty of the hole does not begin until on the putting surface. The green is difficult with a large bowl in the middle that makes the hole locations to the front or back of the green a challenge. This is one of the few true birdie holes on the entire course.

This medium length par 3 has a wide, shallow green. The two deep bunkers in front of the green must be avoided, and any tee shot long will settle in a tightly-mown chipping area.

HOLE 18
The finishing holes is a short par 4, with Lake Oconee bordering the left hand side. The tee shot is played to a wide fairway and leaves a short approach over water into a tiny green that is well guarded by bunkers. The key to this hole will be controlling the distance of the second shot, as a misplaced shot will leave a sand shot at best.
