The question is always hanging in the air at Joey and Tami Stowe’s home: Who’s winning? Tami pulls out a tally sheet: Joey 143, Tami 137. It’s a running birdie count because Joey and Tami always want to know who’s winning. “Tami’s competitive nature attracted me to her,” says Joey, who married Tami in 2000. After 18 years, they moved to Reynolds full time to step up the competition (among other things).
Our first date set the tone. Tami challenged me to a game of tennis. I’d played every sport, but had never played tennis or golf. I figured I’d wear her out, but she kicked my tail. It made me want to play her— and see her — more.
Tami taught me to play golf, too. It’s gotten to the point where we won’t rake sand or mark putts for each other. After the final putt of a round, we give each other a hug and go get a beer and something to eat. [Tami] My joke is that I taught him to be good, but not good enough to beat me. [Joey is silent.]
Our intent was to have a weekend home here. But our Saturday-and-Sunday getaways became Friday-through-Monday getaways. After six months, we thought, “Why aren’t we here year-round?”
