Joe and Sharon Gorman have repeated the same four words every morning since they moved to Reynolds: "Another day in paradise." They rarely sit to enjoy paradise. Sometimes paradise is in the woods. Sometimes it's along the lake. "It's wherever our feet take us, " Sharon says. Their feet are always taking them somewhere. Joe has become known as "Walking Joe." He walks at least 10 miles every day, sometimes as many as 20 miles. He averages 200,000 steps a week; Sharon often hits 100,000 steps. The proof is in their Fitbit data. "We've created our own routes, too," Joe says, "so you might say we've seen it all." Instead of trying to duplicate their efforts, we asked them to direct us to a few of their favorite sports on the trails of Reynolds.
To the Golden Pond
Everyone knows about Angel Pond, but at the southern tip of the curvy Saddle Ridge Traisl, far past The Preserve clubhouse, is this quiet spot where few people tend to wander. "We moved to Reynolds for the natural surroundings," Sharon says, "and then when Joe retired we started walking more - and talking more. It's been good for us in a lot of ways." Sometimes, they look up from their conversations and see hidden gems like this.
To the Lakefront Views
Among the most popular segments on the nearly 6 miles of Angel Pond Trails is the one that traces around the Lake Oconee shoreline, with the water on one side and beautiful Reynolds homes on the other. "We've done that lakefront walk a thousand times because it never gets old," says Joe, who figured out how to include the route on his 10-mile roundtrip "commutes" to St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital, where he volunteers. "As you might guess, our cars have low mileage."
To the Peeks of Creek
The Gormans find excuses to walk for any kind of gratification. They walk to play tennis or pickleball and they walk to Eighty8 Kitchen + Cocktails for coffee. When Sharon walks to The Lake Club Fitness Center, Joe will walk a round of golf on one of Reynolds' world-class golf courses - an 8-mile circuit. Afterward, he might go for another walk. "One of the trails is along Reynolds Parkway where I can catch glimpses of Creek Club."
Over a Bridge to Somewhere
Joe and Sharon find more hints of paradise on their four-mile roundtrip walks to The Ritz-Carlton and among their 9,000 steps to The Rock House. One of the very best spots, however, is a footbridge along Browns Ford Road. it takes just a few dozen strides from home to get there. "We're on that bridge quite a bit," Joe says, "and then we keep going." Another paradise is over a hill under a canopy of trees, around a corner, or in the woods. "It's wherever our feet decide to take us."
