Consistent Chipping
– Michael Patrick Shiels
Jose Lopez, Head Professional, Great Waters Golf Club at Reynolds Lake Oconee, Georgia, teaches “consistent chipping.” “Most amateur golfers spend way too much time practicing their full swings and not nearly enough working on their short games. But there’s tons of evidence that the short game is the fastest way to lower scores, especially for average players,” he says. “Many teachers and students make the short game much more difficult than it has to be. I say, don’t overcomplicate things: Keep it simple and you’ll quickly see improvement. As an example, here’s all you need to know to hit consistently good chip shots:” -Set up with your feet close together, just wide enough apart that you can stand comfortably. -Open your body slightly to the target. -Position the ball back in your stance, on line with your back foot. -Lean the shaft toward the target, pointing at your front hip. -Put most of your weight on your front side (you should be able to lift your back leg without falling over). -To hit a low shot, take the club back low on the backswing. -To hit a high shot, add a little wrist hinge on the backswing. Remember: Keep it simple. And practice.
